Since upgrading to Gnome 2.24, gedit has been hanging on launch and taking around 30 seconds to become responsive. A work around, while waiting for the bug fix, is to disable the ‘File Browser Plugin’ under Edit > Preferences > Plugins.
I had a hard disk failure late yesterday evening. That’s two now in recent months.
No end of fiddling with fsck utils would remedy the situation but at least testdisk enabled me to copy the data off. I did try dd but it was proving painfully slow for some reason.
Today I have introduced a windoze user of many years to Linux. I have also introduced them to the dulcet tones of the Clash.
I feel a warmth inside that comes from having done a good job. Days like these are the icing on the cake of life.

In light of this story I have to ask the question, WTF is windoze doing in space in the first place?
Where do I go to apply for the International Space Station Geek job? They obviously need someone up there installing Linux ASAP.
